Important News – The SOLAS Amendments

Is the supply chain ready?

Changes to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), bring in new rules, which dictate that all containers have a verified weight certificate in advance of being loaded onto a vessel.

The amendments, which come into force on the 1st July 2016 are an attempt to reduce the number of accidents at sea caused by loads being poorly distributed on ships due to mis-declaration of weights.

Failure to comply with the changes will involve fines and possibly criminal sanctions for those in the supply chain, which could of course involve policyholders.
